Since 1987, the Federal Republic of Germany has provided a total of 850.000 Euros (ca 33.000.000 Baht) for the preservation of Northern Thai manuscripts, the subsequent digitalisation of microfilms, and the direct digitalisation of manuscripts.

The project is part of the Cultural Preservation Programme (CPP), through which the German Federal Foreign Office since 1981 has supported more than 2.700 projects in 144 countries with a total of more than 65 million Euros (ca 2.500.000.000 Baht).
In the Kingdom of Thailand during the last 35 years the programme has spent approximately 1.500.000 Euros (ca. 58.000.000 Baht) funding a large variety of projects such as the compilation of Lau Na-stone inscriptions, the restoration of Wat Suthat in Bangkok and Wat Ratchaburana in Ayutthaya, the publication of Thai literature, a workshop on crafting musical instruments and consultancy on ceramics pottery.
The current Northern Thai Manuscripts Preservation Project will be completed on 21 March 2018 in Chiang Mai.
